Discovering and Cultivating Community Cultural Wealth

This presentation is intended for students as well as professors/instructors. This presentation will help students be more aware of the wealth of their social capital and how this can be useful as they continue their academic and professional journeys. It is also intended for professors/instructors because it may help them view their diverse, first generation, or underrepresented students in a new light. Dr. Tara Yosso intended for Community Cultural Wealth to be used by professors and instructors of college students because through her research she found that many of them were not aware of the cultural wealth and background they brought with them to their college/university classrooms.

Dr. Latania Marr y Ortega has been a bilingual educator for 20 years. She recently graduated with her Educational Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Culture and Language at K-State. During her time at K-State, she facilitated courses in Teaching English as a Second Language for the Center of Intercultural and Multilingual Advocacy (CIMA) in the College of Education as well as an active member of the President’s Commission for DEIB.

Dr. Marr y Ortega taught in a variety of public school community settings. She has been a bilingual dual language elementary school teaching in the South Valley of Albuquerque, New Mexico for ten years where she also was an instructor in the UNM Family Literacy program that was based at the school. She also taught as a secondary English Language Arts teacher in Las Vegas, New Mexico where she also continued her work with families and the school community.

Her passion to engage of linguistically diverse families grew throughout her career. Her dissertation, “Transforming teacher perspectives of culturally and linguistically diverse families through critical reflection”, exemplifies the importance of teachers being critically reflective about their intentions when engage their families. She continues to share the message that it is imperative that our teachers and school leaders be reflective of the biases that they hold that could inhibit the learning of the students they serve.

Dr. Marr y Ortega recently re-entered the public education workforce. I am the first ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages) Coordinator for secondary grades (6-12) for USD 383 Manhattan/Ogden.
