Getting Started

The Office of Undergraduate Studies in the Division of Biology is for all biology majors and minors, and for students interested in changing their major into our program. Advising is about more than just picking out your classes. Your advisor is here to help you with goal setting and career planning, share information about graduation requirements and course selections, help with finding opportunities for research or internships, share referrals to other campus resources, and support you through your experience at K-State.

Contacting your advisor is easy! Check your Student Center in KSIS to find out who they are (you may have several) and email them or stop by the Office of Undergraduate Studies located in 103 Ackert Hall. It is open 8am-5pm on a "no appointments needed" basis, with advisors also located across the hall in 116J. You can also call 785-532-5718 or email biology@ksu.edu.

Welcome to the Division of Biology! You're in charge. You are responsible for your success, and your advisors and faculty members are here to help you.

Before enrollment, take the time to prepare by checking your DARS report to see what classes you need, and making a list of questions you have for your advisor. Be sure to tell your advisor if you have any special needs or circumstances. Get to know your advisor, and remember they are here to help you. Discuss your long-term goals with them, and any opportunities you are looking for. Let them know early if you are experiencing personal or academic challenges. There are a lot of resources to support students at K-State, and your advisor will be able to help you find the best options and solutions.

Check out the K-State Academic Advising Syllabus for university guidelines on expectations for you and your advisor. This tool can help you stay on track and guide you through academic advising from before your first class through graduation.

In order to enroll in classes, you are required to meet with your advisor. Here are a few quick steps to follow:

  1. Review your long term plan (if you have made one with an advisor) and your DARS report
  2. Check if you have any holds on your account
  3. Meet with your advisor 1-2 weeks before the day/time specified in the right-hand menu of your KSIS Student Center
  4. Once you have met with your advisor, they can lift your advisor flag. You will be able to enroll at the specified enrollment day/time. Enroll as early as possible for the largest selection of open courses and sections.
