Undergraduate Research Fellowships
The following research fellowships are available for undergraduate students enrolled in Division of Biology programs:
College of Arts and Sciences Undergraduate Research Scholarships
Undergraduate students enrolled in any major in the College of Arts and Sciences can apply for research awards to conduct projects with faculty members in the college. Applications are accepted for fall, spring, and summer semesters, and students selected for research awards will receive a scholarship award of up to $1,000 that will be applied to the student’s financial aid package.
Developing Scholars Program
The developing scholar's program offers high-achieving, serious-minded, underrepresented students research projects in their field of study with faculty mentors. Scholars will receive academic, social, and financial support while becoming integrated in the intellectual climate of the university. If you are a student from a group that has been historically underrepresented in science and higher education in Kansas you are strongly encouraged to apply.
K-INBRE (Kansas IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence) Research Scholars Program
K-INBRE currently supports three programs for students interested in attending graduate school in biomedical science. 1) The regular K-INBRE scholar program provides up to $3,600 in support for students per year. These students are generally discovered their freshman year and are funded for two years assuming satisfactory progress the first year. 2) Students in the K-INBRE summer/semester scholars program are nominated by the KSU campus coordinator and can receive up to $3,600 in support per year. 3) The Star Trainee program selects an outstanding junior to receive $5,500 in support their senior year, plus reimbursement of up to $1,500 for travel to a national scientific meeting to present their work. Students selected for these programs are expected to commit 450 hours to research activities, participate in KSU K-INBRE scholar's meetings, and present their research at the annual K-INBRE symposium held in January. They will also be expected to participate in local research symposia when appropriate.
McNair Scholars Program
The McNair Scholars Program is a comprehensive program structured to prepare undergraduates for successful careers as graduate students, professors, and professional researchers. McNair Scholars are from socio-economic groups that are under-represented in graduate programs and college faculties across the country. The program was established in 1986 by the Congress in honor of the late Dr. Ronald E. McNair for his accomplishments as a scholar and an astronaut. McNair Scholars will participate in a paid summer research internship, receive preparation for the GRE and other entrance exams, receive assistance in applying to appropriate graduate programs, receive funding to attend research conferences, and assistance in locating funding for graduate school. Review of applications to the program begins the second Friday in September.
Terry C. Johnson Basic Cancer Research Center Student Awards
Each year, the Johnson Cancer Research Center awards $1,500 scholarships to students who pursue cancer-relevant research projects in its affiliated laboratories.
Summer Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program
The Summer Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (SUROP) at Kansas State University gives undergraduates from underrepresented groups a first-hand experience with the research process. This experience is designed to help students prepare for graduate school and other advanced study.
