Ground skink - Scincella lateralis

An adult ground skink who had recently lost his tail

Description:

  • 3-5 inches total length
  • Found in leaf litter of forests and grassy areas
  • Active during day
  • Feed on small arthropods and earthworms
  • The individual above has lost his tail recently and is just beginning to regrow it.

Interesting fact:

  • Adult ground skinks are not much larger that hatchling Great Plains skinks
