Woodhouse's toad - Anaxyrus woodhousii

An adult Woodhouses toad sitting in shallow water

Description:

  • 2.5-4 inches total length
  • Found in sandy, lowland floodplains
  • Hidden in daytime, hunts at night
  • Breed in river floodplains
  • Feed on a variety of small terrestrial arthropods

Interesting fact:

  • Most toads are poisonous, meaning they must be eaten to inflict damage. Venomous animals inject their toxins using a bite or sting. Poisons are thought to have evolved as an anti-predator device, while venoms are thought to have evolved primarily for prey capture. Toads produce a variety of unique Bufotoxins from the large glands visible behind the eye.
