University General Education (UGE) at Kansas State University assumes that an undergraduate degree signals more than specialized competence for a career. It seeks to expand the experiences and vision that K-State undergraduates carry forward in the conduct of their lives and to help them develop the interest and capacity for improving and enriching life.
The overarching goals of University General Education are the same for all K-State undergraduates and the colleges are encouraged to allow students flexibility in their decisions about how to pursue these goals in light of individual interests, preferences, and personal styles.
K-State graduates should exercise educated habits, which include, at least: critical and analytical thinking, careful and thoughtful reading, writing and speech, an inclination to wonder, a penchant for questioning, and a desire to solve puzzles and problems. Students' UGE experiences should inspire them to appreciate differing viewpoints, consider openly new and divergent thinking, weigh ideas with careful skepticism, challenge conventional wisdom, and explore for more accurate and more useful knowledge.
