CDC updates and simplifies respiratory virus recommendations

Submitted by Shawn Funk

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently revised its COVID-19 guidance.

The updated guidance recommends that when people get sick with a respiratory virus they should stay home and away from others. For people with COVID-19 and influenza, treatment is available and can lessen symptoms and lower the risk of severe illness. The recommendations suggest returning to normal activities when, for at least 24 hours, symptoms are improving overall, and if a fever was present, it has been gone without use of a fever-reducing medication.

While COVID-19 remains a threat, today it is far less likely to cause severe illness because of widespread immunity and improved tools to prevent and treat the disease.

Lafene Health Center continues to offer COVID-19 vaccine opportunities as well as symptomatic testing for students, faculty and staff. Symptomatic testing is available for individuals who are presenting with COVID-19-like symptoms. If asymptomatic testing is needed for travel or other reasons, a PCR test can be completed at Lafene Health Center. The cost of COVID-19 testing will be the responsibility of the patient. Appointments can be made on the myLAFENE+ patient portal or by calling 785-532-6544.
