Caldas steps down as assistant provost for international collaboration and education programs

Submitted by Grant Chapman

After 11 years of service, Marcellus Caldas will step down as assistant provost for international collaboration and education programs and return to full-time duties as professor of geography and geospatial sciences effective this January.

Caldas was the mainstay for the Office of International Programs, or OIP, when it came to faculty and department internationalization. Under Caldas' leadership, the office developed and offered innovative programs for faculty and staff, including the "how to build an international profile" series geared toward junior faculty, graduate students and postdocs. Caldas published and edited the digital OIP Global magazine and interacted with the associate deans of research, continually bringing an international perspective to the discussion. Caldas, a former international educator of the year at K-State, led the annual award process as chair of the award committee. Nationally, Caldas was a member of the Association of International Education Administrators and served on its governance and leadership committees.

"We are going to miss Marcellus in the OIP," said Grant Chapman, associate provost for international programs. "I valued Marcellus' support, advice, knowledge, wisdom and encouragement. He is committed and passionate about Kansas State University, international programs and the internationalization of K-State."

A celebration of Caldas' leadership and service to the Office of International Programs and K-State's internationalization efforts will take place from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, at Union Station by JP's. RSVP for the event.
