Learn how to sew with K-State Libraries

Submitted by Cailin Riley

Are you interested in learning basic sewing skills or learning new tips and tricks to improve skills you already have?

Come join K-State Libraries and the Sunderland Foundation Innovation Lab this semester for several sewing workshops. No prior experience is needed for the Sewing Basics workshops, where you'll learn how to make a simple drawstring bag.

The following workshops will be offered:

  • Sewing Basics
    • Oct. 26 from 5-7 p.m.
    • Nov. 3 from 5-7 p.m.
    • Nov. 15 from 10-11:30 a.m.
  • Blind Hem Stitch, Nov. 1 from 9:30-10:20 a.m.

Come learn how to use a sewing machine's blind hem stitch. The blind hem stitch creates an almost invisible hem on clothing.

  • Buttonhole Stitch, Nov. 7 from 9:30-10:20 a.m.

Learn how to use a sewing machine's buttonhole foot. The buttonhole presser foot that comes with our Singer heavy-duty sewing machines can automatically sew a buttonhole for many sizes of buttons. In this workshop, you'll learn to change presser feet, change stitch settings for buttonholes, and place the fabric for the start of the buttonhole.

  • Sewing Improv, Dec. 1 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

In this sewing improvisation event, we'll select fabrics from our boxes of small scraps and sew them together to make bigger fabric. The bigger fabric could then be used to make other crafts like a covered pencil holder, a pocket for a tote bag, or an abstract wall hanging.

The two creative styles we'll show are crazy quilt style and monochromatic style, but you are welcome to sew any style that makes you happy.

You should have basic sewing skills. For example, you should be able to thread the sewing machine and sew a straight stitch.

No registration required. This is a come-and-go event, but you should plan to spend half an hour or more selecting and sewing your fabric.

All workshops are free to attend and will take place in the Sunderland Foundation Innovation Lab. To register for classes, please visit the event webpage.
