Vote, Respect, Engage — We are Family

Submitted by Pat Bosco

Dear K-State Students,

What an interesting time to be a college student in our country! You are in a great position to witness and be a part of history.

Take advantage of this opportunity to shape our future. Grow by listening to alternate points of view through open and respectful conversation. The university encourages free expression of ideas while also being considerate of others. I encourage you to explore this year's candidates and the issues, and make an educated vote in the upcoming election.

As you participate in our democratic process, remember that our great country is bigger than one election or one candidate — regardless of who wins. A peaceful transition of power is one of the foundations of our democracy, and a caring atmosphere in light of our differences is one of the foundations of our university.

Please remain engaged in learning about the issues that face our country and let's come together in true K-State family fashion. As a family, we value broad diversity, embrace respect and care for one another, and encourage civic responsibility. Each of you — regardless of race, color, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or religion — are cared for and valued at K-State. Please join other K-Staters to provide support to those who may feel hurt or have emotional distress by this year's political campaigns.

There are several opportunities for the university community to come together and talk peacefully. The K-State Student Union Program Council's Election Watch Party is from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8, in the Union courtyard. All political affiliations are welcome. UPC also is hosting a post-election debate about social justice at 12:20 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9, in the courtyard.

Lastly, the Staley School of Leadership Studies will facilitate a series of open discussions to share concerns and thoughts about how to come together after the election and continue working toward a better future. The series will start at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9 in the Town Hall of the Leadership Studies Building.

Fair treatment, respect and well-being of all K-Staters is of the utmost importance to this university. Thank you for continuing this most essential part of the K-State tradition.

Sincerely,

Pat Bosco, Ph.D.
