Parker lectures at American Musicological Society annual conference

Submitted by Craig B. Parker

Craig Parker, an associate professor of music history in the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance, presented his paper, "Unification of Indian and Western Musical Idioms in Reena Esmail's 'Meri Sahki Ki Avaaz (My Sister's Voice),'" at the 89th annual meeting of the American Musicological Society on Nov. 11 in Denver, Colorado.

Nearly 2,000 scholars from six continents attended the conference, held jointly with the Society for Music Theory. Parker's paper examined Esmail's 20-minute virtuosic showpiece about sisterhood, written in 2018-19 for female Hindustani singer, soprano and piano quintet.

Esmail, one of America's most-performed living composers, was a guest composer and lecturer at K-State in 2017.
