Today: Faculty Brass Quintet to perform at St. Isidore's Catholic Student Center

Submitted by Craig B. Parker

The Kansas State University Faculty Brass Quintet will perform its annual fall recital at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2, at St. Isidore's Catholic Student Center, 711 Denison Ave. Admission is free.

Members of the quintet are John Kilgore and Craig B. Parker, trumpet; Jacqueline Fassler-Kerstetter, horn; Daniel Hinman, trombone; and Steven Maxwell, tuba.

Their repertoire for the concert includes music from the 16th century to the present. The program will open with "Gravity" by Anthony Barfield, a musical interpretation of Langston Hughes' poem "Dreams Deferred." Three virtuoso instrumental pieces by the 17th-century German master Samuel Scheidt will follow.

The second half of the concert will feature Leonora Duarte's "Sinfonia No. 2 a 5 de Duodesimi toni," Peter Schikele's "Mozart on Parade," and Kevin McKee's "Vuelta del Fuego." Leonora Duarte (1610-1678) was one of the first female Flemish composers to write chamber music. Peter Schickele, also known as the creator of the mythical composer P. D. Q. Bach, wrote "Mozart on Parade" for the Canadian Brass. It is an ingenious and whimsical romp through many of Mozart's most popular melodies.

The concert will close with Kevin McKee's "Vuelta del Fuego," an enticing work that brings forth multiple images from tender romantic themes to swaggering sounds of Mariachi bands.

The Kansas State University Faculty Brass Quintet has performed throughout Kansas and Missouri in a variety of venues, ranging from public schools to motion picture theaters.
