Learn more about hosting programs/events involving minors

Submitted by Ryan Van Dusen

Is your department/program hosting an event or summer camps that involves minors coming to campus or attending virtually? If so, this is a reminder that any event hosting children under the age of 18 is required to follow the K-State Protection of Minors in University Programs Policy or PPM3130.

The Office of Risk and Compliance will host a Zoom information session to answer questions and discuss the protection of minors on campus at 2 p.m. March 23. Please email rvandusen@k-state.edu and you will be sent the Zoom meeting information.

Some of the requirements are as follows:

  • Adults working with youth in university programs should avoid one-on-one interactions whenever possible.
  • Register all program participants with parental consent.
  • Complete background checks for all program staff and volunteers.
  • Complete annual training on topics set out by the assistant vice president for risk and compliance.
  • Report all incidents involving accidents, injuries, abuse or other incidents that poses a threat to safety or well-being. Report incidents at k-state.edu/report/
  • Ensure program participants do not have access to sensitive facilities at the university.
  • Follow supervision and ratios. Publish supervision and ratios in program policies and handbooks.
