K-State animal sciences faculty member Terry Houser honored

Kansas State University faculty member Terry Houser has been named a recipient of the American Meat Science Association’s Distinguished Achievement Award. He will be honored at the association's Reciprocal Meat Conference June 18 in Auburn, Ala.

Houser, an associate professor of animal sciences and industry, teaches and conducts research primarily in adding value to meat and the effect of livestock diet on meat quality. 

From the American Meat Science Association: "Dr. Houser's published and proprietary research that has directly improved color stability and eye appeal of beef and pork products produced in Kansas and surrounding states, which are marketed nationwide. Dr. Houser, in collaboration with other Kansas State researchers, was asked by the National Pork Board and American Meat Institute Foundation to benchmark the amount of heterocyclic amines, or HCAs, found in a large number of commercially-available meat products and to research possible mitigation strategies to decrease HCA formation."

As a result, Houser and the K-State team are investigating new mitigation strategies to decrease heterocyclic amines formation, and have published several peer-reviewed articles on the subject.
