K-State technology entrepreneurship program celebrates 10th anniversary

Submitted by Alison Young

The technology entrepreneurship intern program, a specialized internship program for K-State graduate students, is celebrating its 10th anniversary. The program was established in 2003 to give Master of Business Administration students the ability to gain exposure to the process of creating, protecting and commercializing new technologies. Since that time, the program has been expanded and now offers all graduate students the opportunity to apply for positions within the program.

The entrepreneurship program is a paid position that includes rotations in three organizations within the university — the Advanced Manufacturing Institute, or AMI; the office of preaward services, or PAS; and the Institute for Commercialization, or KSU-IC. The Advanced Manufacturing Institute assists in designing and fabricating new products and processes and helps bring them to market; preaward services supports the university’s research and scholarly activities through proposal development and grant and contract review and negotiation, among other support services for sponsored projects; and the Institute for Commercialization handles licensing of a wide range of intellectual property and assists with the start-up and expansion of technology-based, high-growth enterprises.

Since its creation, the two-year program has provided more than 45 graduate students the ability to participate in a wide range of technology development activities. A few of the students’ accomplishments include:

  • Assisting the university and private industry in filing more than 25 patent applications
  • Developing marketing and sales programs for more than 40 products
  • Aiding in the successful licensing of university developed technologies
  • Negotiating hundreds of nondisclosure and material transfer agreements to facilitate university-industry partnerships

The technology entrepreneurship intern program is comprised of six positions, which offer dedicated graduate students the ability to gain hands on experience on the process of developing, protecting and commercializing new products and technologies.
