Volunteers needed for advising Silver Key sophomore honorary
The Silver Key sophomore honorary is looking for two student-centered co-advisors for the group beginning April 2016. The co-advisors will be members of the K-State faculty or staff from any department, and will assist the 40-member group with their meetings and service projects.
Silver Key is the only honorary dedicated to sophomore students, and is one of few such groups in the nation. Other campuses from across the United States have looked to Silver Key for advice on starting their own organizations. Started in 1922 as SPARKS, the organization has served K-State and the community for decades. Also known as SPURS in the late 1980s and 1990s, SPURS became Silver Key after disaffiliating from the national SPURS organization in 1995. Silver Key service projects are planned and implemented each month by a committee of members, providing opportunities for individual and team leadership and involvement. The group only meets twice a month for one hour, in addition to service projects.
Silver Key students are dedicated to scholarship, leadership and service. Students must have a GPA of 3.0 or above to apply. Members go on to serve K-State in numerous ways. Former members have become great students and graduates, and some have been honored or elected to such positions as Truman, Marshall, Goldwater and Udall scholars, student body presidents and vice presidents, student ambassadors, and national officers in FFA. Our new co-advisors will be proud to work with such talented students from all majors on campus.
Silver Key is active on campus and in the community. Past activities include fundraising for the annual Sleep Out for the Homeless event, volunteering to assist with student projects on campus, "Dancing to the Oldies" with senior citizens, K-State basketball game sponsorship for Boys and Girls Club of Manhattan, highway clean up and game nights for military families. Silver Key was honored in 2012 by the city of Manhattan for its service to the community.
Currently, Silver Key is in the process of selecting new members from the current freshman class, and this would be a great time to join the group as a co-advisor.
