Jan. 20 Kansas Board of Regents meeting updates

By Communications and Marketing

The monthly Kansas Board of Regents meeting on Jan. 20 included several items related to Kansas State University.

Foresight 2020

Board of Regents President and CEO Blake Flanders presented the fifth annual progress report for the board's 10-year strategic plan, Foresight 2020.

Transfer courses

The Regents approved 10 additional courses that can transfer among all Kansas public postsecondary institutions. The newly approved Kansas State University courses include: Biology 1 and lab for majors, Engineering Physics 1 and lab, Engineering Physics 2 and lab, General Chemistry and lab for nonmajors, Introduction to Criminal Justice, Introduction to Mass Communication, Introduction to Social Work, Personal and Community Health, Personal Finance and Physical Geology.

Weapons policy

Regents reviewed results from the Campus Employees' Weapons Survey, conducted by Fort Hays State University's Docking Institute of Public Affairs in conjunction with the regents’ student advisory committee.

They also amended the current policy on weapons possession to comply with the state's Personal and Family Protection Act 2015 amendment. Read the Amending the Policy Fact Sheet or the pages from the meeting agenda — including key provisions for the new policy and the amendments — for more information.

Shane Bangerter, Board of Regents chair, asked that university policies be submitted for board review by October 2016 so universities and campus communities can begin planning for 2017 implementation of the concealed carry law.

Kansas State University has formed a working group and is in the process of forming five subgroups to determine how best to implement the concealed carry statute on university campuses within the guidelines of the Regents' policy. Please contact the Office of the Vice President for Administration and Finance at 785-532-6226 or tarap@k-state.edu if you are interested in serving on a subgroup.
