Dave Hartnett, Jennifer Frederick awarded Coffman Honor Council Award

Submitted by Steve Starrett

The Kansas State Honor and Integrity System relies on faculty, staff and student volunteers to serve as a member of the Honor Council. The James R. Coffman Award annually recognizes one faculty or staff member and one student member of the Honor Council whose contributions cannot go unnoticed.

The 2014-2015 recipients of the James R. Coffman Honor Council Faculty and Student Awards are David Hartnett, university distinguished professor of biology, and Jennifer Frederick, USDA National Needs doctoral fellow in grain science.

"Dr. Hartnett and Ms. Frederick provided critical leadership while spending dozens of hours under stressful conditions to uphold our academic integrity standards, and to ensure fairness for all involved," said Steve Starrett, director of the Honor and Integrity System.

"Serving on the Honor Council has only increased my appreciation of the importance and value of K-State's Honor and Integrity System," Hartnett said. "It not only upholds high standards of academic integrity at the university, but the review and hearing process also serves as an important learning opportunity for students and a critical part of their professional development. I've also gained an appreciation for the role of the Honor and Integrity System in educating many of our international students who are the products of very different academic cultures that have different policies, practices and student expectations."

"The Honor Council has been one of the most fulfilling positions I have taken on since arriving at K-State," Frederick said. "It has taught me a lot about academic integrity and how important it is to be an active member of the university."

The Honor Council and the Honor and Integrity System seek to be resources to promote academic integrity and uphold the standards of the Kansas State University community. Please contact honor@k-state.edu if you have questions or would like someone to speak in your class or to an organization.
