Mortensons honored by fine arts camp in Michigan

Submitted by Kristin Mortenson

Gary and Kristin Mortenson have been selected for the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp’s “Gallery of Distinguished Faculty,” which honors faculty members who have helped build the camp through many summers of outstanding personal service.

Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp is a summer school for the arts set on a 1,300-acre campus in the Manistee National Forest near Twin Lake, Mich. Established in 1966, the camp serves more than 5,000 talented students in music, art, dance and theater each summer. The faculty members come from all over the United States as well as Canada, Germany, and France.

The Mortensons began teaching at Blue Lake in 1986. Gary Mortenson teaches trumpet, technique classes and sectionals, and performs with the Festival Band and Festival Orchestra; and Kristin Mortenson teaches violin, technique classes and sectionals, and performs in the Festival Orchestra and the Opera Orchestra. The Mortensons serve as brass and string division coordinators and have both been featured as soloists with the Blue Lake Festival Orchestra. The Mortensons said they are honored to be included in the Gallery of Distinguished Faculty, which is prominently displayed in the lobby of the Student Arts Center.

At K-State, Gary Mortenson is head of the music department and professor of trumpet. Kristin Mortenson is the music department outreach coordinator and teaches music theory, fundamentals and listening lab.
