Highlights from the Sept. 13 K-State Faculty Senate meeting
Below are the highlights from the Sept. 13 faculty senate meeting. Meeting minutes will be available on the website as they are approved by faculty senate.

Sept. 13:
- W. Frank Spikes, faculty senate parliamentarian, reminded senators of parliamentary procedures used during senate meetings.
- Past President Cauble gave Spikes a small token of appreciation from faculty senate for his work as parliamentarian.
- Annual dispute resolution reports were presented.
- Annual honor and integrity system report was presented.
- Cauble distributed faculty senate lapel pins to all senators present. This is the first time these have ever been presented. It was felt that a pin would help identify senators to those on campus and was also a small way of recognizing senators for their contributions toward shared governance at K-State.
Standing committee and student senate reports:
- Academic Affairs: Senator Bennett reported on continued work on suggested syllabus language to assist students in understanding what authorized aid is. A task force will begin review of K-State 8 tagging and other K-State 8 related topics. No course and curriculum items were on the agenda for approval at this meeting.
- Faculty Affairs: Senator Hughey reported on work that is continuing in Faculty Affairs; University Handbook revisions, anti-bullying language, clinical faculty, professor of practice, etc.
- FSCOT: Senator Rintoul reported on items discussed at their first committee meeting last week. A new content management system is being used for Web design; remote access via SSH and RDP use will be blocked due to security risks involved. However, VPN use will be available; textbook submission by faculty and how this is currently done was also discussed.
- FSCOUP: Senator Condia reported on their first meeting. Ed Rice from the Division of Facilities was their guest. Information from a peer review done in 2006 and two reports from Sight Lines were given to committee members as background information. Improved communication was one of the topics discussed.
- Student Senate: Senator Rauth reported on several items, including privilege fee allocations; initiatives they are working on this year, such as SGA In Touch where they hope to reach out more to students on campus; and student senate’s meeting with Darwin Abbott regarding student parking.
Announcements:
- President Vontz reported that he will be chairing the Council of Faculty Senate Presidents as it is K-State's turn this year for that privilege. Therefore, he reports to the regents at the monthly Board of Regents meetings.
- Faculty Senate Leadership Council is in the process of reviewing the faculty senate constitution and hopes to have changes made to it this year.
- Mediation coordinator Becky O’Donnell has resigned and will be with us until the end of this semester. Faculty Senate leadership and the Executive Committee will be working on appointing a replacement by that time.
For the Good of the University:
- Senator Bonella announced K-State Libraries is having Faculty & Graduate Student Library days Oct. 5 and 6. Multiple sessions will be offered between 1:30-4:30 pm. More information can be found at the following website.
- State of the University Address: Manhattan campus, 3:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, Forum Hall in the Student Union.
- State of the University Address: Salina campus, 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, Salina College Center Conference Room.
