A well-planned assimilation of information can reduce a new employee's anxiety and focus his/her motivation. The Employee Orientation Program accomplishes that by helping employees to acclimate themselves to the University, to understand how they fit into the larger picture, and to feel like valued members of the K-State family.
The Division of Personnel Services, Department of Administration, issues guidelines covering content and length requirements to ensure all orientation programs for the State of Kansas are comparable in quality and content.
The Employee Orientation Program is divided into three distinct parts:
Parts 1 and 2 are presented sequentially in a standardized program by the Division of Human Resources. The following topics are covered:
Part 3 is conducted at the work-site under the guidance of the immediate supervisor; it includes:
Responsibility for successful completion of the program rests with the Division of Human Resources and the employee's immediate supervisor.
Representatives meet with new employees and present a standardized orientation program. The scheduled dates and times for employee orientation may be found at the following web site: http://www.ksu.edu/hr/benefits/orient.htm
The Division of Human Resources is also responsible for developing and implementing the orientation strategy and for maintaining records.
The employee's immediate supervisor provides the work unit orientation as outlined in the Orientation Checklist (PDF). (The department may add any additional topics that will contribute to the employee's assimilation.)
Employee orientation (Parts 1-3) shall be completed within 30 days of the classified employee's appointment date. Unclassified employees should also complete employee orientation (Parts 1-2) within 30 days of their appointment.
Departments can help by scheduling new employees for the Division of Human Resources' Employee Orientation program as quickly as possible. Pre-registration is required. To register, call 785-532-6277 or e-mail: BENADMIN@ksu.edu
All new classified employees and any classified employees rehired after a two-year or greater absence are required to complete Employee Orientation, Parts 1-3. All new unclassified employees are strongly encouraged to attend the Division of Human Resources' orientation.
The department is to provide employees with both the New Employee Orientation Forms Checklist (PDF) and the Orientation Checklist (PDF) as a guide in assuring completion of documents and processes.
If, during the Employee Orientation Program (Parts 1-2), an employee wants to enroll in a benefits program for which he/she is eligible, the Division of Human Resources will complete the enrollment form (e.g. savings bonds, health insurance).
The Division of Human Resources will document completion of the Employee Orientation Program in the HRIS Training Administration database.
