go-to guide for parents

Key student services offices

AAC, CES, OSAS, ACIC. Let’s be honest: how many people actually know what all these acronyms stand for, much less what these offices do? Here’s a quick and easy guide to navigating K-State’s offerings.

Before you dial

Remember, college students are supposed to learn to be more self-sufficient, so give the names of these offices to your student; don’t call them yourself.

Academic Assistance Center

The AAC does just what the name implies: tutoring, academic counseling, credit by examination, freshman orientation classes, and more.

Academic and Career Information Center

Want more in your life than flipping burgers? ACIC is all about majors and careers. It provides students with career assessments, curriculum guides, employment profiles of recent grads, graduate school information, and courses on career development.

Admissions

As some of the first Wildcats you meet, the admissions staff members are your best friends during the college selection and enrollment process.

Adult Student Services

This office assists students who meet any of the following criteria: 25 years of age or older, married, have children, or are re-entering the educational system after several years.

Career and Employment Services

Money, money, money. We all need it, and CES can help students find part-time or full-time jobs, internships, and even careers. The office publishes job openings, conducts resume workshops and interview clinics, and organizes on-campus interviews and job fairs.

Computing and Telecommunications Services

From cable TV in the residence halls to the wireless Internet all over campus, this office keeps Wildcats plugged in. But it does more than manage networks: students can bring computers and other technology in for repairs, receive answers to high-tech questions, and even protect their machines with free antivirus software (sorry, it's for K-State students and faculty only).

Counseling Services

Sometimes you just need someone to talk to. When that happens, K-State’s Counseling Services office supports students with academic, career, and personal concerns using comprehensive counseling and mental health services.

Disability Support Services

This office accommodates students with physical and learning disabilities, depending on the needs of individual students.

Diversity and Dual Career Development

Enhancing racial and cultural diversity at K-State and in Manhattan, this office helps to create a campus environment that fosters academic excellence and an appreciation of diversity.

Educational Supportive Services

This office assists low-income, first-generation, physically limited, and learning-disabled students in achieving their educational goals.

Greek Affairs

These days it’s more than Animal House and Legally Blonde. Think academics and leadership, not toga parties. K-State’s Greek Affairs office oversees fraternity and sorority life at K-State, including recruitment, individual chapters, and the overall Greek experience.

Housing and Dining Services

Life in the residence halls has changed from the days when you were in school! Students today can have suites with private bathrooms, cable TV and Internet in every room, and food options such as Mongolian barbecue. Housing and Dining Services is your one-stop shop for information on residence halls, other on-campus living opportunities, dining halls, and residence hall government.

International Student Center

Here students can nab a conversation partner from another country, learn a new language, and increase their cultural knowledge, as well as gain new friends. This office creates intercultural sharing and learning experiences, including conversation programs, language classes, and a lecture series.

K-State Student Union

This is the place for weekly movies, activity nights, art displays, and cultural festivals. The Union—the hub of K-State’s social life—is also home to the bookstore, student government offices, and a food court featuring a variety of cuisine choices.

Lafene Health Center

Is your student feeling ill? Can’t make it to the family doctor in your hometown? Here’s an insider tip: Wildcats visit Lafene Health Center, K-State’s professionally accredited healthcare facility, for cost-effective, physician-directed healthcare and health information.

Multicultural Student Organizations

This office provides a network of support to multicultural students, fosters leadership development, generates diverse programming, and helps student connect with community service and service-learning projects.

New Student Services

Like the Office of Admissions, this office works primarily with prospective students and their families. It’s also the home of the K-State Parents and Family Association, so drop the office a line to get involved.

Office of Student Life

If it affects students at K-State, you can find it here: from student activities to crisis response, misconduct policies, and personal counseling.

Recreational Services

K-State offers many ways to get in shape, and this office oversees them all: intramurals, fitness programs, sports clubs, and the multitude of activities at the Rec Complex.

Religious Activities

For students in need of a little faith, the coordinator of religious activities offers pastoral care and counseling, provides information about campus religious groups, assists with faith development, and creates dialogues on interfaith harmony.

Student Activities and Services

The movers and shakers of K-State come here to get involved and leave their imprint on the campus. The office is home to student organizations, the Student Governing Association, Consumer and Tenant Affairs, judicial affairs, and the students’ attorney.

Student Financial Assistance

Need money for college? This office administers federal, state, and university student aid programs in the form of scholarships, grants, loans, and employment opportunities.

Women’s Center

From counseling and support to educational events and rallies, the Women’s Center works to promote a safe and equitable work and learning environment at K-State. The office provides support on campus for the Campaign for Nonviolence, student action groups, and 24-hour assistance for sexual assault and other hate crimes victims.
