On-campus jobs
K-State employs about 5,000 students to serve meals, take tickets, maintain campus buildings, do office work, and more. Working on campus gives students good real-world experience while also offering flexibility and convenience.
Although K-State has many job opportunities, it can be like a scavenger hunt trying to find the right one. Here are a few networking tips to tell your student about:
Source #1: Administrative assistants
Many academic departments hire student workers for their offices. And who knows more about what’s happening than the administrative assistant? Many assistants can tell students whether or not they are hiring, when they will be hiring in the future, and how to apply. Getting to know the assistant also gives your student a more direct connection to the boss.
Source #2: Classmates or professors
Talking to classmates and professors offers a different perspective than, say, the newspaper. Many students have on-campus jobs; ask them how they found out about their jobs and how they applied. Professors hire student assistants, too. Tell your students to talk to their professors to see if they have student positions available.
Source #3: Student workers
Encourage your student to talk to student workers he or she sees on campus, and ask them if they know of any job openings. Sometimes students hear about open positions before they are advertised.
Source #4: The obvious
If your student still hasn’t gotten any leads, don’t forget the usual routes. Career and Employment Services posts campus job openings on its job board in the Union. CES also post jobs online on its website. Sometimes employers e-mail students within a certain major about job openings. And there’s always that time-trusted standby: the Collegian classifieds.
