Assessment of Academic Advising
At
Kansas State University

Fall 2001

Each fall semester students logging into the KATS Enrollment System to select their upcoming spring semester courses are first asked to complete the online Academic Advising Questionnaire. Students are asked to verify their academic advisor and to indicate whether or not they have conferred with their advisor during the current semester. Students are also asked whether or not they consulted their advisor about their selection of courses for the upcoming spring semester. Those indicating they have not conferred with their academic advisor are asked to indicate a reason or reasons why they have not done so. Students indicating they have conferred with their advisor are asked to respond to eight statements about the “quality” of the advising they received. The statements are designed to address the Regent’s five advising criteria. Students respond to each of the eight statements according to the following scale:

This statement is:

Definitely False (1)
More False than True (2)
More True than False (3)
Definitely True (4)
Can’t Judge

The results of the KATS Questionnaire are summarized into an all-university report, individual reports for the eight undergraduate colleges, and a report for each of the academic departments and advising units. For each report produced, the response frequencies and the mean response for each statement are reported. Copies of all reports are provided to the Provost. College Deans receive copies of their individual report along with those for each of their college departments. Department Heads or Unit Directors receive copies of their department/unit reports. Reports for individual advisors are prepared at the advisor’s request.

A total of 63 departmental/unit advising reports were prepared using data collected during the Fall 2001 pre-enrollment period. The Table that follows shows the median and the range of departmental/unit means for each statement based upon the four point rating scale. The median and the range are also reported for departmental/unit response rates and the percent of students indicating they had conferred with their academic advisor.
