How Fraternity Recruitment Works
Getting started
If you are interested in a becoming part of a group that holds 65 percent of campus leadership positions, achieves cumulative GPAs higher than the university average, and donates more than $200,000 to charity annually, Greek life may be the right choice for you. Here's how to get started:
1. Register for fraternity recruitment online.
The process is complete in minutes, and your contact information will be stored in a secure database. Each fraternity's recruitment chairmen will be able to access your information and contact you.
If you wish to apply to one of our historically African-American or Latino fraternities, please go directly to that chapter's website to locate application information, rather than filling out the fraternity recruitment registration form.
See multicultural chapter websites
2. Check out all the fraternities online to find out more. Be sure to contact the ones that interest you.
3. Attend ongoing recruitment events to meet current chapter members and other potential new members.
Remember, this process works best when you take the initiative, so feel free to contact chapters directly. If you need help, don't hesitate to contact the Greek Affairs office.
How it works
The following description of the recruitment process applies only to the 24 IFC fraternities at K-State. Our historically African-American and Latino fraternities may follow a similar process; please check with the chapter you're interested in for further details.
Incoming freshmen may sign with a fraternity as soon as they have graduated from high school, or as early as April, or they may continue the recruitment process through the summer and even into the fall semester before signing. The goal of the recruitment process is to learn more about the fraternities and interact with current members so you can decide which one to join.
Each of our fraternity chapters has one or two people elected to serve as recruitment chairperson(s). These men will review your information from the database and begin calling, writing, or e-mailing you within a few days. They will send you information about their fraternity, why you should join, what kinds of philanthropies they are involved in, what kinds of social activities they are planning for next year, etc. You can also contact them to begin the process.
You can also learn more about each fraternity on your own by visiting our fraternity list. You can click on each fraternity’s individual website to learn about its mission, values, principles, history, and more.
Once you have decided which fraternities that you're interested in, you may begin to participate in their ongoing recruitment events. These events, scheduled throughout the spring and summer, are small social gatherings designed to introduce prospective new members to the current fraternity members. The chapters may have a barbecue, go bowling, play paintball, golf, watch movies, etc. Invitations will be sent to you by the recruitment chairpersons as events are scheduled.
The process is complete once you sign a bid card with a chapter. This card is also signed by a fraternity representative, and then turned in to the Greek Affairs office for our records. This card simply authorizes our office to release your grades to your fraternity for the purpose of monitoring your progress. For example, the chapters will need to know whether you are meeting the minimum grade requirements to remain in the fraternity each semester; some chapters also use grades to determine room assignments or scholarships.
New members of fraternities are generally able to move into the chapter house their first year, though it is a good idea to secure your housing before coming to K-State. The residence halls have a contract cancellation policy, so you will not necessarily be bound to live in the residence halls if you later decide you want to live at the fraternity. Cancellation fees are $200 after June 1, and after August 18 you will only receive a 60 percent refund.
