Frequently Asked Questions

What does it cost to be Greek?

Every fraternity and sorority is self-supportive. Each chapter and its national headquarters determine the monthly dues and membership fees. Some chapters also include a one-time pledge and initiation fee. While the costs vary by chapter, the yearly expense is comparable to that of the residence halls and is, in many instances, less expensive.

Every chapter has payment plans available.

Will my student receive academic support?

The purpose of Kansas State University is to provide an education for its students; that’s why fraternities and sororities consider academics their top priority. Our Greek grade point average has remained well above the university average for more than 25 years, and the majority of the chapters exceed the all-men’s and all-women’s averages. Every chapter has its own scholarship program; scholarship resources are also provided by the Greek Affairs office.

Statisitics have shown that your son or daughter has a greater chance of graduating simply by being a member of a fraternity or sorority. The small group living experience enhances retention.

What are the housing options for my student?

Housing for fraternity men and sorority women differs at K-State. Depending on the financial and organizational structure of the chapter, the men usually live in the fraternity house all four years.

Sorority women typically do not live in the chapter house until their sophomore year. New members live in the residence halls or apartments during their freshman year or first year of membership, and then move into the chapter home.

All of the fraternities and sororities are complete residential facilities serving 20 meals a week. The majority of our chapters have live-in housemothers.

The multicultural fraternities and sororities are not housed.

Greek chapter houses are all privately owned and are not university property. Many chapters offer a virtual house tour or photographs on their websites.

Alcohol-free housing

All sorority chapter houses are alcohol-free by policy. Seven fraternity chapter houses have some kind of alcohol restriction: Acacia, Alpha Gamma Rho, Beta Theta Pi, Delta Upsilon, FarmHouse, Phi Delta Theta, and Sigma Phi Epsilon.

For more information about their alcohol policies, please contact the chapter's Housing Corporation Board president.

What are the social opportunities for my student?

The opportunities for Greek members to meet new people, foster community relations, and develop interpersonal skills are readily available within the Greek community. Fraternities and sororities participate in professional development seminars and etiquette lessons, as well as social functions and parties. An added dimension to the planned social calendar is each chapter’s support of a local or national philanthropy. Some social events may involve an Easter egg hunt for Big Brothers/Big Sisters or competitive events to raise money for charities.

What is Greek Week?

Greek Week, a week-long series of events sponsored by the Greek community, is a time of fraternity and sorority pride, alumni and faculty recognition, and chapter awards. The whole week is full of incredible school spirit and Greek pride. The week is comparable to Homecoming week and should not be confused with recruitment week.

Greek Week takes place in April of each year and includes events such as Greek Olympics, Greek Idol contest, neighborhood barbecues, an alumni reception, and our annual Greek awards banquet.
