The Graduate School will be hosting a Town Hall session on March 23rd from 2-4pm in Leadership Studies Town Hall. In the ”Building GS Strategic Leadership Roles: Town Hall” we will talk about all of the initiatives the Graduate School has launched and our plans for the next year. This is also an opportunity to interact with all grad constituents. We look forward to seeing you at the Town Hall!

Elections for service on the Graduate Council are coming up! Here’s a timeline of events:

    • Thu, 24 FEB: Call for Nominations for Graduate Faculty to serve on Grad Council (3-year terms) goes out via listserv.
    • Thu, 17 MAR: Nomination deadline.
    • Thu, 24 MAR: Qualtrics ballots e-mailed to Graduate Faculty for voting.
    • Mon, 04 APR: Deadline for ballot to be completed.
    • Mon, 11 APR: New elected members informed and announced.
    • Tue, 03 MAY: New members installed at Graduate Council meeting

The Graduate School commencement ceremony is scheduled for 1p.m. Friday, May 13th in Bramlage Coliseum and we invite all graduate faculty to attend and celebrate with our graduates.

If you are planning to attend as a non-hooding faculty, please fill out our Qualtrics survey to help us plan for seating arrangements.

If you do not own your own regalia, please visit the commencement website for rental information. We hope to see you there!

This year, 41 graduate students participate in the Three Minute Thesis (3MT). This is largest number of participants since K-State began hosting the competition in 2016. Faculty mentors play an important role in supporting student participation and success in valuable professional development activities like the 3MT.

    • Congratulations to the faculty members mentoring this year’s 3MT winners!
      • The 2022 3MT 1st place winner and People’s Choice award winner is Mehreen Iftikhar, master’s student in grain science, mentored by Sajid Alavi, professor of grain science.
      • Kiana Schulze, doctoral student in kinesiology, is this year’s 2nd place winner. Kiana is mentored by Timothy Musch, university distinguished professor of kinesiology, and David Poole, university distinguished professor of kinesiology, and anatomy and physiology.
    • The following faculty members are mentoring students who competed in this year’s 3MT: Christine Aikens, Sajid Alavi*, Greg Aldrich, Bradley Behnke, Manreet Bhullar*, Marcellus Caldas, Shing Chang, Anthony Ferraro, F. The March Brown Bag topic has been titled Commencement. In this session, Angie Pfizenmaier and Miranda Schremmer will talk about the best way to support your students for the Spring 2022 ceremony. They will also give general information about the commencement ceremony and answer any questions regarding graduation deadlines. This brown bag will be held in person in Eisenhower 121 and via zoom on March 22, 11:30am - 1:00pm.

Graduate Student Success

Sales are now open to rent or purchase academic regalia. Rentals can be placed through close of business on April 30, 2022 and late rental orders can be placed from May 1st until May 9th with a $10 late fee. Last day to order regalia for purchase is March 31, 2022. Please visit the commencement website for more details on ordering and wearing graduation attire.

It was previously noted that if you missed the March 1 deadline, your name would be printed in the Fall commencement program booklet. Per the Commencement Committee, graduates who did not meet the March 1 deadline will not have their name printed in a subsequent commencement program booklet. This does not affect your participation in commencement.

Congratulations to Mehreen Iftikhar, MS student in grain science, selected as K-State’s 2022 Three Minute Thesis winner! Iftikhar will receive a $500 scholarship and represent K-State in the 3MT competition of the Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools (MAGS) 3MT competition in April. Iftikhar was also voted by the audience as the 3MT People’s Choice award winner, for which she will receive a $125 scholarship. Kiana Schulze, PhD student in kinesiology, won 2nd place in this year’s 3MT competition and will receive a $250 scholarship. Opportunities for Graduate Students

This interactive virtual session is designed to help graduate students gain insight and tools for navigating tough challenges in their academic, work, or community contexts. Using a systems lens, we will explore how to diagnose problems and take action in the midst of complexity and uncertainty. This session will be held on Zoom, March 11 from noon-1:30pm and is part of the Graduate Student Leading Change workshop series.
