Per Diem Rates

The Comparative Medicine Group (CMG) is obligated to recover the costs associated with the procurement, care and support of animals used in research or teaching at Kansas State University. Investigators are billed on a monthly basis for those expenses. Bills are distributed to the respective investigators following the month these charges were incurred. Per Diem rates are calculated using the NIH’s Cost Analysis and Rate Setting Manual for Animal Facilities published in 2000 as a guide for establishing charges.

All charges are per animal except for rodents and frogs, which have a per cage charge. The number of animals housed per cage must conform to the standards established in the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals and the Animal Welfare Act (AWA). Animals housed together must be compatible.

Per Diem charges include: daily observation of every animal, one or two feedings per day of a standard ration and standard husbandry and sanitation of cages or pens according to CMG SOPs and applicable guidelines.

A pre–project meeting prior to submitting an ARF90 will be held to discuss any additional ancillary charges that might be incurred for specialized husbandry requirements such as feeding specialized diets, the use of personal protective equipment not required for normal husbandry, breeding colony management, administering or dispensing of medications or compounds, special procedures and other requests not considered part of normal husbandry as well as a minimum room occupancy charge for rooms with low animal or cage numbers. Rodents will be housed with caging density that allows for only one cage change per week; density or phenotype causing more cage changes will incur additional charges. Per diems will be charged as described below.

CMG technicians are available to assist investigators with their research projects. Ancillary charges for these services will be on an hourly basis. The charge for agricultural technician time is $20.00 per hour and the charge for professional (veterinarian and veterinary technician) time is $35.00 per hour. Additional charges for overtime or holiday pay may be incurred.

The CMG has the ability to transport and deliver animals for investigators. Animal transportation charges will be based on a mileage charge of $0.86 per mile with a minimum transportation charge of $10.00.
The use of controlled substances requires a license from the Drug Enforcement Agency. All researchers that need to use controlled substances must obtain their own DEA license number.

All orders prepared by CMG on behalf of our Clients will be assessed a $5.00 administrative processing fee per order (this will include Pharmacy orders as well).
