About Us Activities Resources | | THE PURPOSE OF SAGA-L
This list is for announcements about SAGA activities and discussion related to
the field of student affairs and the Student Counseling and Personnel Services
graduate program at K-State. This list is for SAGA members only. SAGA-L is a
"topics" list. More information on list topics is discussed below.
HOW TO USE THE LIST
To send a message to all the people currently subscribed to SAGA-L, just send
e-mail to loni@ksu.edu. When you send mail to this address, the information will beforwarded on to the listserv.
GENERAL LISTSERV ETIQUETTE and SAGA-L POLICIES
When you send e-mail to loni@ksu.edu, the information will be reviewed by the list owners. Before you send an e-mail to the list, you ought to ask yourself, "Would a
significant number of people on this list want or need this information?"
If you can't answer yes, it is possible that you shouldn't send that e-mail
to the list. For example, if you are replying to a request from a specific
person, you typically would *not* send that reply to the list. Your reply is
probably only of interest to the originator of that request, not everyone on
the list. Although, many times it is perfectly legitimate to hold a group
discussion on the list.
Although listserv etiquette is often ambiguous, there is one policy on SAGA-L
that must be followed. SAGA-L is not a place to forward e-mail jokes, e-mail
inspirations, e-mail petitions, or advertisements for products or services
that are not related to student affairs. Continued violation of this policy
will result in restrictions on your ability to send mail to the list.
SAGA-L is a professional forum.
TOPICS ON SAGA-L
To help facilitate a useful graduate student forum, SAGA-L is a topics list.
Topics allow you, and the other list subscribers to control what kinds of
information you receive from the list.
There are currently 8 topics on SAGA-L:
saga:
is for announcements relating to SAGA sponsored events and activities.
Reminders about meetings, social activities, SAGA sponsored professional
development, and minutes are all posted to this topic. Announcements relevant
to the student personnel program or graduate study here at K-State are posted
to this topic as well.
news:
is for forwards or important information relating to student affairs.
discuss:
is for discussion or questions about SAGA, graduate study, student affairs in
general or here at K-State. It serves as an open forum.
comps:
is for discussion or announcements relating to comprehensive exams in the
student personnel program here at K-State.
jobs:
is for announcements, discussion, or forwarding of job postings for graduate
students who are engaged in a job search.
exec1:
is reserved for SAGA executive board members and advisors.
exec2:
is reserved for SAGA executive board members, committee chairs, and advisors.
Unless you have already requested otherwise, you are set to receive the saga
and news topics only. You can request additional topics by writing the list
owner at saga-l-request@ksu.edu.
USING TOPICS
Everything you send to the list must have a topic. To use a topic, simply put
it in the beginning of your subject line. For example if the e-mail subject
line looks like this:
To: loni@ksu.edu
From: Loni Jensen <loni@ksu.edu>
Cc:
Subject: saga: next meeting 9-1
Then everyone who has requested the saga topic will receive this e-mail.
If the e-mail subject line looks like this:
To: loni@ksu.edu
From: Doris Wright Carroll <dcaroll@ksu.edu>
Cc:
Subject: news,discuss: curriculum changes
Then everyone who requested the news or discuss topics will receive this
e-mail. Note that if someone has requested both topics, they will only
receive your e-mail once. If someone then wanted to discuss the news about
"curriculum changes" his subject line would look like this:
To: loni@ksu.edu
From: Steve Benton <leroy@ksu.edu>
Cc:
Subject: discuss: curriculum should have electives
Then only those who wanted to get discussion would get Dr. Benton's e-mail
thoughts about the elective principle.
Just remember, when you send e-mail to SAGA-L, the subject line of your e-mail
must start with a topic. If it doesn't, no one will get your message.
LEAVING THE LIST, CHANGING TOPICS, OTHER FEATURES
Listserv allows you to change your topics, suspend receiving e-mail if you go
on vacation, and a whole host of other features. At any time you want to make
changes, you can do one of two things:
1) You can e-mail the list owner at loni@ksu.edu and
the changes will be made for you.
2) You can tell listserv to make the changes for you.
The first option is the easiest. The second option requires learning how to
send commands to the listserv. If you want to learn to send commands to the
listserv, read the next section. If you'd rather e-mail the list owner when
you have problems, you don't need to read anything else in this message. If
you have questions or problems, send your request to saga-l-request@ksu.edu,
*NOT* to the list address (i.e. saga-l@ksu.edu). Thanks for reading!
SENDING COMMANDS TO THE LISTSERV
When you send commands to the listserv, you are sending an e-mail to the
computer and telling it what to do. The computer's e-mail address is
listserv@ksu.edu. DO NOT send commands to saga-l@ksu.edu. Nothing will
happen. People on the list will get a copy of your commands and wonder what
you were trying to do. When you send a command to the computer, you simply
address an e-mail to listserv@ksu.edu, type the command in the first line and
send your e-mail. Don't bother to sign your name or anything else. The
computer doesn't care.
The following are a list of commands you can send to listserv@ksu.edu and a
description of what the commands do.
REVIEW SAGA-L BY NAME
This command tells the computer to send you the list of names and e-mail
addresses of everyone on the SAGA-L listserv.
SIGNOFF SAGA-L
This command will remove you from the SAGA-L listserv.
SET SAGA-L NOMAIL
This command will temporary halt mail from the SAGA-L listserv. This is useful
if you are going on vacation or going to be away. You can turn your mail back
on by sending the command: SET SAGA-L MAIL
SET SAGA-L TOPICS +topic1_name -topic2_name
This command adds topic1 to the list of topics you receive and tells the
listserv to stop sending you mail from topic2. For example:
"SET SAGA-L TOPICS -jobs -comps" will remove you from both the jobs and comps
lists. Another example: "SET SAGA-L TOPICS +news -discuss" will add you to
the news topic, but will remove you from the discuss topic.
QUERY SAGA-L
This command will tell you what options you have set on SAGA-L. This also
includes what topics you have specified to receive.
INFO SAGA-L
This command will send you generic info about the list, including descriptions
of all the current topics.
INFO REFCARD
This command will send you a description of all the listserv commands.
As always, if you have questions or difficulties, send an e-mail to
loni@ksu.edu, and the list owner will help you out.
