Reflects on Current Events in Music Education
This article begins by recognizing that unlike most teachers, music teachers have to be the biggest advocates for their programs; if a music teacher is without the proper materials necessary, they must approach the principal and request these things, and convince parents and co-workers of their necessity, this isn’t the case with most teachers.
The article then goes on to explain the basic needs of an Orff lesson, such as 40 minute class period, space enough for any and all necessary instruments, without intruding on movement space. 12-15 students is the ideal class size, basic Orff instruments are necessary, and sound equipment for listening examples and folk dancing, and other needs such as equal salary, recognition from parents and fellow teachers, reimbursment for ongoing training, etc.
This article is short, yet full of really good information about what is needed to conduct a true Orff classroom.
Some things I hadn’t thought about were the ideal class sizes, importance of a sound-proof room so as to not disturb surrounding classes when instruments are played, salary compared to other classroom teachers, and ongoing training costs... These were things I just had not thought of regarding the classroom, but I understand how important they are!
I plan to print this and keep a copy, in the event that I find myself in an empty classroom, and face the issue of requesting materials, workspaces, or whatever the event may be, I’ll have a guide.
