MANHATTAN — The 2022-2023 McCain Performance Series presents the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra with piano soloist Alessio Bax at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28, in Kansas State University's McCain Auditorium.
In 1972, a group of young artists made history by creating an orchestra without a conductor. Since then, the Grammy Award-winning Orpheus Chamber Orchestra has recorded more than 70 albums, toured in 46 countries across four continents and collaborated with hundreds of world-class soloists. The orchestra's 34 musicians work together and rotate leadership roles for all works performed.
Bax combines exceptional lyricism and insight with consummate technique in his performances. Awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant in 2009, he became prominent with first-prize wins at the Leeds and Hamamatsu international piano competitions. Bax has appeared as a concerto soloist with more than 150 orchestras, including the London, Royal and St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestras; the New York, Boston, Dallas, Cincinnati, Seattle, Sydney and City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestras; and the NHK Symphony in Japan, collaborating with such eminent conductors as Marin Alsop, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Sir Andrew Davis, Fabio Luisi, Sir Simon Rattle, Yuri Temirkanov and Jaap van Zweden.
