WHAT IS FAIR TRADE?

What is Fair Trade?

Fair Trade is a movement to create a more equitable system of global trade. Fair Trade focuses on direct relationships between producers overseas and buyers in the U.S., Canada, Australia and Europe. The Fair Trade system is based on parity, accountability, transparency, and mutual respect in business practices. Fair Trade certification of products ensures that the products were produced under ethical and sustainable conditions including:

· Payment of a fair wage/price in the local context

· Creating opportunities for disadvantaged or marginalized producers

· Gender equity

· Safe and healthy working conditions

· Environmental protection and sustainability

Fair Trade connects us as consumers to the producers and artisans who create the products we buy. This encourages us as consumers to think about where our products come from and what went into producing those products.

What types of Fair Trade products are available and how do I know they are fairly traded?

Many products are available including fruits and vegetables, coffee, vanilla, spices, tea, chocolate, clothing and other items. See our “Local Buyer’s Guide” page to learn where you can buy these products locally and our “Fair Trade Vendors” page for online vendors.

You will know that a product is Fair Trade certified if you see one of these two symbols on the package.
