Strong emotions are exhausting
Strong emotions depend on the release of hormones like adrenaline. Intense and continuing emotional arousal can leave us feeling exhausted because the adrenaline is making us more alert and more poised for action. We cannot sustain continued emotional arousal without physically shutting down. Fatigue can interfere with effective problem solving and decision-making. Chronic fatigue can cause a gradual breakdown in strength and the ability of our bodies to resist disease.
