Staying safe: Winter weather tips

Submitted by Division of Communications and Marketing

With snow and bitterly cold wind chills expected this weekend and next week when students return to campus, the K-State community is advised to take precautions to remain safe.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for Manhattan until noon today, Friday, Jan. 12, and a wind chill watch from tonight through the morning of Tuesday, Jan. 16. One to four inches of snow is expected today, with wind chills as low as 35 below zero through Tuesday morning.

Staying safe: Winter weather tips

  • Wear layers and proper winter weather gear to help maintain your core body heat. A healthy person who isn't properly dressed for extreme cold can experience hypothermia in less than 10 minutes.
  • Wear appropriate footwear. Choose shoes or boots that offer a good grip on snow and ice.
  • Watch for icy spots on walkways and report any problem areas to Facilities Customer Service at 785-532-6389.
  • Walk on designated walkways when possible.
  • Knock off snow and water from your shoes when entering buildings.
  • Keep windows closed on campus. This will help keep heat in the buildings and reduce the chance for pipes to freeze and cause water damage.
  • If you have a generator, don't run it in an enclosed space, and make sure your carbon monoxide detector is working.
