Architecture students win scholarships in 12th annual MANKO Design Competition

Submitted by Megan Elzinga

Three Kansas State University graduate students in the College of Architecture, Planning & Design, or APDesign, received scholarships in the 12th annual design competition sponsored by MANKO Window Systems, Inc. on Dec. 6 in Regnier Hall.

Evan Sedlacek, a fourth-year architecture student, Elmhurst, Illinois, received a $5,000 scholarship as the competition winner for his project from the summer 2023 design studio taught by Professors Genevieve Baudoin and Bruce Johnson for his project "Convergence: Lawrence River Station."

Tom Murillo, a fourth-year architecture student, Wichita, received a $1,500 scholarship for his project "Craftsman Revival — A Missing-Middle Typology" from the fall 2023 design studio taught by Professor Grant Alford.

Victor Boyda, a postbaccalaureate architecture student, Kansas City, received a $1,000 scholarship for his project "Hay is for Horses" from the summer 2023 design studio taught by Professor Grant Alford.

The projects in Architectural Design Studio 5 focus on the holistic design of the building — from a sophisticated understanding of space down to the development of architectural details and deployment of systems. The fourth-year studio faculty develop a diverse range of project briefs of varying programs, sites and scales.

Following a review of the department's six studio sections' nominees who were selected to compete for the MANKO awards, the jurors, who are established practitioners/academics in the field, presented the awards accompanied by a discussion of the studios' work.

The competition jury included Neal Evers, associate director of undergraduate education and associate teaching professor, University of Colorado at Boulder; Mark E. Franzen, president and a principal of HTK Architects in Kansas City; and Harvey Hine, HMHAI founding partner, managing principal and principal architect in Boulder, Colorado.
