#45 Enforce a time out
Basic, ages 3-5
Separate children briefly to sit quietly by themselves, apart from other family members. Establish how long the time out will last (about 1 minute for each year of the child's age). Never send children to a locked room, confined space, or other frightening location. Never forcibly restrain a child to a chair or bed. The object is to create boredom, not terror. The timer begins when the child is quiet.

Example:
After spitting on her baby brother, a 4-year-old is told to sit in a kitchen chair for about 4 minutes until a timer sounds.
