Tool #7. Catch your child being good

Difficulty: Basic Type: Prevention Ages: 2-18
Definition:
Respond with affection and encouragement immediately when children do something worthwhile. These are deposits you make in the relationship bank account. Using too much reinforcement, though, can cause children to pay more attention to your rewards than developing internal values for their behavior.

Example:
bulletSarah, that sure was nice that you helped Tim with his homework. He's struggling with his math, and I bet your help might make a difference for him. Thanks.
