Tool #43. Seek professional help

Difficulty: Basic Type: Guidance Ages: 2-18
Definition:
When you cannot resolve a serious problem by your own efforts, seek professional assistance. An understanding pediatrician, school counselor, teacher or therapist may provide the insight and support your need to deal with a problem. Seeking professional help is a decisive act by parents who care. Some problems are beyond being resolved by any parent's personal resources. Seeking professional help shows hope, not helplessness.

Example:
bulletA 6-year-old child frequently hits other children and destroys property at home. Every effort to change the child's aggressive behavior fails. The hitting and biting and destructiveness seem to be increasing. The parents meet with a local child psychologist to explore what might be causing the problem and how to respond.
