Tool #34. Remove child from situations he or she cannot handle

Definition:
Gently remove children who are losing self-control in a difficult situation. Fritz Redl calls this antiseptic bouncing.

Examples:
bulletFather hears his two preschoolers arguing. He tells the older child to help him make dinner.
bulletA second grade child is being mercilessly teased by other children for the costume he has on at a halloween party. He begins screaming and grabbing toys from the other children. The supervising parent takes him to another room to play computer games. She asks her teenager to show him how to begin.
