Tool #21. Ask for consequences

Difficulty: Intermediate Type: Guidance Ages: 4-18
Definition:
When children appear to be indifferent to the consequences of their misbehavior, involve them in a discussion about how they and others have been affected by what they have done. Make sure they understand the consequences of their choice to misbehave.

Example:
bulletJamie (7 years old), you took the toy from Mr. Bridge's store without paying for it. What happened as a result?
I got into trouble; you got mad; I have to apologize to Mr. Bridge.
Yes, you do. You will also have to pay for the toy you took. I am not just mad--I'm also worried about your taking the toy. I love you.
