Find common ground
If you can find something to agree on, you strengthen the partnership with the other. Look at the big picture. Find something in the circumstance you sincerely share with the other person. Describe this commonality to the other person.

#22. Turning a problem into a partnership
Consider the previous example with the temper tantrum. In your journal, write the heading, “Turning a problem into a partnership.” Before continuing, find something in common you hold with the toddler. Look at the situation through the eyes of the child. What is the child’s experience? Try to convert the conflict into a partnership. Continue after you invest some thought in this issue. If you cannot think of anything, don't worry about it. You are not being graded.
