December brings holiday-themed art, music and theatre to campus

With the holiday season under way, the Kansas State University campus will play host to a variety of holiday-themed music, dance and theatre performances, as well as art exhibits, in December.
The following events, all free unless otherwise indicated, are sponsored by the university's McCain Performance Series; the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance; and the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art. They include:
* The Beach Museum of Art's Family Holiday Workshop will be 1:30-3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, at the museum. The workshop will include a variety of winter-based art activities for the whole family. This event costs $5 per child for the general public, and $3 for museum members. Reservations are not required, but children must be accompanied by an adult.
* The university's Collegiate Chorale, Concert Choir, In-a-Chord, the K-State Singers, Men's Choir, Women's Choirs and Alumni Choir will present their Holiday Extravaganza at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, in McCain Auditorium. The concert will be directed by Joshua Oppenheim and Julie Yu-Oppenheim, assistant professors of music.
* Students of Slawomir Dobrzanski, associate professor of music, will present a concert at 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, at the Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship, 481 Zeandale Road, Manhattan.
* The Music Theory Class Composition Recital will be at 5:45 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3, in All Faiths Chapel. This recital will feature the top compositions by students in Music Theory 1-4 classes, which are taught by David Littrell, university distinguished professor of music; Kristin Mortenson, instructor of music; David Pickering, assistant professor of music; Tod Kerstetter, professor of music; Karen Large, assistant professor of music; Ben Worcester, instructor of music; and Craig Weston, associate professor of music.
* The Wind Ensemble and Concert Band, under the direction of Frank Tracz, professor of music, and Don Linn, instructor of music, will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3, in McCain Auditorium.
* The Beach Museum of Art will host "Meet the Art" at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, at the museum. A performance by university piano students will follow at 11:30 a.m.
* The university Percussion Ensemble, directed by Kurt Gartner, professor of music, will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, in McCain Auditorium.
* The Flute Ensemble, directed by Karen Large, assistant professor of music, will present works by Gliere, Debussy, Delibes, Clarke and Offermans at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, in All Faiths Chapel. The concert will feature the full flute ensemble, chamber groups and a dance piece choreographed by Laura Donnelly, assistant professor of dance.
* The McCain Performance Series will present "A Leahy Family Christmas" at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, in McCain Auditorium. The performance will mix Celtic music with traditional Christmas carols. * The university's chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, a national professional music fraternity, will present a Christmas recital in All Faiths Chapel at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5.
* The Faculty Brass Quintet will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, in All Faiths Chapel. Members of the quintet include Craig Parker, associate professor of music, and James Johnson, master’s student in music, on trumpet; Jacqueline Fassler-Kerstetter, associate professor of music, on French horn; Paul Hunt, professor of music, on trombone; and Steven Maxwell, assistant professor of music, on tuba.
* The Disney classic "Beauty and the Beast" will come to life on the McCain Auditorium stage at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11. Tickets for this McCain Performance Series event are sold out.
