ACM-SIGAI hosts philosophy professor Jon Herington to speak on artificial intelligence ethics

Submitted by Jordan Roth

Join the Association for Computing Machinery-Special Interest Group on Artificial Intelligence, or ACM-SIGAI, for a discussion on ethics of algorithm bias by Jon Herington, assistant professor of philosophy. Learn why machines struggle to overcome human biases at 5:30 p.m. Monday, March 4, in 1116 Engineering Hall. Pizza will be provided. RSVP for the event online.

Abstract: There is increasing concern that machine learning algorithms are systematically biased against certain classes of people. In this talk, Herington will discuss several different accounts of when and why algorithmic bias is morally wrong. Herington suggests that thinking carefully about why discrimination is wrongful helps us identify (i) the wrongs that different measures of unfairness seek to capture, and (ii) the value tradeoffs being made when we prefer one measure over another.
