Michelle Turvey-Welch recognized as Professor of the Week

Submitted by Faculty Senate

The Professor of the Week recognition is coordinated by Faculty Senate, the president's office, K-State Athletics and the Division of Communications and Marketing. Recipients are faculty members selected by Faculty Senate caucuses. Those selected are provided tickets to a men's home basketball game of their choosing and are recognized during halftime. This is just a small token of appreciation for those who teach at K-State.

The first recipient this year is Michelle Turvey-Welch who was recognized at the Nov. 9. home game.

Turvey-Welch is an associate professor and head of the metadata, preservation, and digital initiatives department for K-State Libraries. In this role, she has led major library initiatives such as movement of large portions of the collection to a new high-density storage location and migrating the library catalog to a new platform. She is also the recipient of the Libraries' Brice G. Hobrock Distinguished Faculty Award.

Since the May 22 fire, Turvey-Welch has led the recovery and preservation of library collections. She and her staff entered the building nearly every day after the fire to assess the collections, check temperatures, supervise the boxing and removal of materials, and coordinate cleaning and storage logistics with Belfor, the disaster recovery company the university is using. Turvey-Welch's efforts over the summer and early fall not only improved the outcomes for the collections in general, but offered a calm and rational approach to dealing with the largest disaster in K-State Libraries' history.

We are grateful for her service and leadership over many years and most especially over the past several months in the aftermath of the fire.
