On the fireline

Using a drop torch to set a prescribed fire

Join the Flint Hills Discovery Center, Kansas State University and Riley County Conservation district for a memorable morning of prescribed burning. The Public Fire Workshop is your opportunity for hands-on training in this essential element of the Flint Hills.

Participants attend a required classroom session from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, at the Discovery Center to learn about prescribed burning and fire safety from K-State professors Carol Baldwin and Drew Rickets. Then, participate in an 80-acre prescribed burn on a following Saturday. The first burn date is Sept. 8. Make-up dates are Sept. 15, 22 and 29. Burning is weather dependent so your patience and flexibility is requested to make this program a success.

Round-trip travel from the Discovery Center to the burn site will be provided, leaving at 8 a.m. and returning around 2 p.m. Times subject to change due to weather.

Preregistration is required by Sept. 4. Please register online, call 785-587-2726, or in person at the Flint Hills Discovery Center.
