College of Business student receives Office of Undergraduate Research & Creative Inquiry Research Award

Submitted by Brent Fritzemeier

Celeste Bartels, senior in marketing and management with a minor in German, Tonganoxie, was recently awarded a $1,000 Research Award from the Kansas State University Office of Undergraduate Research & Creative Inquiry.

Bartels has been working on a research study with K-State professor of marketing Swinder Janda on the impact the various types of study abroad programs have on student outcomes such as world mindedness and cultural intelligence.

Janda began mentoring Bartels in the University Honors Program after Bartels studied abroad at the CIMBA program in Italy, which features Janda's International Marketing course.

"During the course, we read articles, now the basis of our research project, from the Harvard Business Review about cultural intelligence and global mindset," Bartels said. "Dr. Janda's expertise and my passion for studying abroad provoked several questions that we are hoping to answer throughout the course of this research project. We hope that the insights we gain will prove to be beneficial and meaningful for students who have studied abroad."

The two are currently putting together a paper to be submitted to the World Congress on Education conference, which will be in Dublin, Ireland in July 2018. They then plan to expand on their research next semester, and eventually publish an extended paper at the Harvard Business Review.
