Mathematics Colloquium Lecture Nov. 2

Submitted by Reta McDermott

Siu-Cheong Lau, Boston University, will present "Affine and Symplectic Geometries" as part of the Mathematics Department Colloquium Lecture series at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2, in 122 Cardwell Hall.

Affine manifolds play an important role in the study of Lagrangian fibrations, toric degenerations and mirror symmetry. They provide useful intuition and visualization of symplectic and complex manifolds. In this colloquium talk, Lau will introduce concrete examples of affine manifolds which are models for rational elliptic surfaces and Shoen's Calabi-Yau manifolds.
