Graduate Student Council professional development workshop today: Communicating Science and Scholarship to General Audiences

Submitted by Kelsey Peterson

Join the Graduate Student Council for the sixth professional development workshop of the fall semester, Communicating Sciences and Scholarship to General Audiences, from 3-5 p.m. Oct. 17 in the Wildcat Chamber at the K-State Student Union.

A national conversation about the need for more and better science communication has intensified in recent months. Sarah Hancock, communications coordinator with the Office of the Vice President for Research, will help graduate students understand why and how to engage with nonexpert audiences, how to avoid pitfalls, and how to formulate messages for maximum effectiveness with different audiences.

We'll discuss benefits to scientists and nonscientists, explore helpful tools and tips, and analyze some good examples. Be prepared to flex your storytelling muscles, participate in small and large group work and discussion, and practice what you learn. Attendees also will receive advice from their peers on effectively communicating research to public audiences. Graduate students who have participated in the Capitol Graduate Research Summit will talk about their experience presenting their research poster to state legislators and share advice on how to prepare for similar presentations.

This workshop will count toward the Graduate Student Council Professional Development Workshop Series.
