Inaugural Campus Sustainability Awards ceremony May 2

Submitted by Ben Champion

The inaugural Campus Sustainability Awards ceremony will be at noon May 2 in Bosco Student Plaza.

The newly established K-State Departmental EcoRep Program through the K-State office of sustainability has selected three awardees to be recognized for their efforts of sustainability on the Kansas State University campus and in the surrounding Manhattan community.

Nominations were considered and accepted for individuals and/or campus entities that promoted reducing campus and community environmental impact, especially in areas of energy conservation, environmentally preferable purchasing strategies, and recycling and waste minimization. Any K-State unit, department, student organization, or any combined collaborative was eligible to receive one of three awards: an Impact Award, an Innovation Award and a Community Spirit Award.

Awardees will be publicly announced and recognized the ceremony, a part of the campus Bike Day event on Bosco Student Plaza. For more information about the awards ceremony or the EcoRep Program in general, contact sustainability@k-state.edu.

The ceremony will award the following efforts:

  • K-State dining services will be given the Impact Award for its work regarding waste management, including recycling, repurposing and composting.
  • Lee Skabelund, associate professor of landscape architecture and regional and community planning, will be given the Innovation Award for his leadership in developing, maintaining, and researching the International Student Center rain garden and Seaton Hall green roofs.
  • Students for Environmental Action will be awarded the Community Spirit Award for its 2012 Fake Patty’s Day recycling efforts.
