APDesign students complete another successful year of APDPro

Submitted by Danna Voegeli

Eighty-three students in K-State's College of Architecture, Planning & Design, or APDesign completed the 2016-2017 requirements for APDPro, the college's professional development program.

Three students also will be recognized for completing the requirements for all five years of APDPro at APDesign's commencement ceremony Saturday, May 13, in McCain Auditorium. Jessica Carson, fifth-year student in architecture, and Courtney Minter, fifth-year student in architecture, both from Kansas City, Missouri; and Sarah Kershner, fifth-year student in architecture, Lee's Summit, Missouri.

The mission of APDPro is to enrich students' experience in APDesign and provide a competitive advantage as they study and prepare to enter the workplace. Students receive a notation on their transcript for each year they complete the program requirements.

More than 420 students participated in the program during the 2016-2017 academic year, attending events and workshops on professional communication, portfolio basics, interviewing and more. APDPro began in the fall of 2013.

As a part of APDPro, APDesign students also participated in the APDPro Mentor Program. Started in the fall of 2015, nearly 40 students have been paired with mentors who are experienced professionals in design, planning and related fields.

Students complete an application to be matched with a mentor during their third year in the college and maintain a mentor relationship with that professional until they graduate.

"I honestly wish that everyone would have this opportunity, and it is so wonderful that our college provides this for us," said Bre Nelson, fourth-year student in landscape architecture. "After connecting with my mentor, I would do it again in a heartbeat. The interactions develop beyond the requirements because so many alumni want to connect with students and truly get to know us, which is extremely beneficial."
